Puff Puff Pass! Cannabis Comix

March 13th, 2020 to February 28th, 2021
Hash Marihuan Museum Barcelona  ground floor, free entry, Carrer Ample, 35, 08002 Barcelona

The new exhibition ‘Puff Puff Pass!’ browses through the ‘smoky’ adventures of various cannabis stars.

The Comics Code Authority in the US began marking the covers of comics with its seal of approval in 1954. Although the Code did not specifically forbid showing the use of cannabis, a clause prohibited all elements that offended good taste or decency. It was then that cartoon character Kerry Drake fought, in his crime comics, against cannabis growers with the argument that they were “making marihuana addicts out of kids”.

These ‘addicted’ kids were Robert Crumb, Paul Kirchner, Paul Mavrides, Gilbert Shelton and Dave Sheridan. These ‘underground comix’ legends began to create cannabis strips in the late 1960s. As these comics were distributed in seed banks and head shops, they could escape the Code’s control, and prosper amongst comic readers. Dealer McDope, Dope Rider, the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and their Spanish counterpart Makoki, became society’s antiheroes.

Nowadays, with more and more countries choosing to legalize cannabis, the work of a new generation of illustrators including Abarrots, Rosa Codina, Aroha Travé and Roberta Vázquez shows that they do not need anyone’s approval. Maybe their cartoon characters do not mention weed straight away, but in many strips you will catch a glimpse of someone rolling a joint. The new exhibition ‘Puff Puff Pass!’ browses through the ‘smoky’ adventures of various cannabis stars.

The history of Bartomeu Terradas, Futbol Club Barcelona and…. Casa de les Punxes.

Bartomeu Terradas is known as a iconic figure of the football world. History teaches us that the football club FC Barcelona should be grateful for this man thanks to a number of high-profile incidents. Bartomeu was the first treasurer of Futbol Club Barcelona and its second president. But his relationship with the club goes beyond these two facts.

First a few short facts about Bartomeu and his life.  Bartomeu Terrades was born in 1874, for the experts among us: 25 years before Futbol Club Barcelona, popularly known as Barça, was founded.

Bartomeu Terradas was born into a bourgeois business family along with three sisters: Àngela, Rosa and Josepha and all of them would later live in the Casa de les Punxes.

The start of FCB. Bartomeu became one of the twelve founders of the Futbol Club Barcelona, a club that nowadays has a reach on a worldwide scale while Bartomeu became one of it’s central figures.

One of the most historic moments was the first game of FC Barcelona, at the time still a small club in which Bartolomeu played and became moreover the first treasurer. After a while he became the second president of the club and the first Catalan. Not only did he help the club with these positions but he was also one of the first patrons of FC Barcelona. Imagine what this club could have started without this figure at the time….

When the club had to leave the first football field where they played, Terradas contributed 14,000 “pesetas” to rent the land where the second one would be located. With this amount of money he actually saved Fc Barcelona from a bankruptcy at that time! This event is another example of a moment where the club would not survive well without Bartomeu.

During the years of Terradas’ presidency, Barça won its first title: the Macaya Cup in 1902. A year before his father died and he had to take over the family business. That year he also married Pilar Soler Julià, with whom they had ten children. A turbulent year for Terradas.

Bartomeu played a total of 31 matches and stopped playing in 1903. He started to move away from Barça in 1905. When the professionalization of the club and the players led Terradas to feel that he was losing the initial concept of the club, Bartomeu came up with a new concept. Between these years he asked the two guys Puig and Cadafalch to build a house for his sisters, which would end up being the monumental  Casa de les Punxes.

Barcelona Zoo

Let´s meet Alex Mascarell Llosa , Scientific illustrator and designer at the Barcelona Zoo.

His favourite animals are definitely birds. “ I like them since when I was 20 years old. I’ve never gave them that much appreciation until I began working ith them at the Zoo… then it all changed. I became a birder, a fat birder! Travelling all over to twitch as much species as posible”.

This pasión came from his mother. “She’s been always a keen observer of nature. When she was young she used to spend lots of hours out in the field watching and observing each living being around”.

What happened during Lockdown in the zoo? “ To be honest, some animals have changed a bit their habits as they do not have the input of visiting people around. But the vast majority have not changed their habits and they do much or less the same. Keepers of the Barcelona Zoo work hard and straight to give the animals the maximum wellfare. During this pandemic they’ve had also to deal with the social situation of their friends,… and keep on doing their best to make their animals behave as always been doing”.

We love his ilustraciones,  Alex himself is very critical about his own work. “Actually, I’m not that proud of my illustrations. I try not to watch them after publishing or after a publication is out on sale. I allways find that they could be better, and I find all the errors in each drawing”. I try to learn and enjoy drawing each single day. I’d love to draw the 11500 species of birds of the world… but, I guess that this won’t be possible at all. By now, what I want is to keep collaborating with Lynx Edicions, a publishing company based here in Barcelona and specialised in nature books, in their field guides of the world».

Do you think we have learned a good lesson  from this lockdown phase? «We have learned that nature is the first and the last shield that protect us from diseases, virus, etc. We are quite aware that breaking balance in nature has a price that we cannot pay at all. Every single human should have became humble when understanding that a really tiny single non living thing, can kill you. But in the other hand our civilisation is allways focused on growing and growing without understanding that nothing in the world can grow forever. Nothing. And if it tries to do it, nature tends to balance the situation. So, nature will suffer more on forthcomming years as new policies to recover from COVID crisis will lead conservation of nature to the last place of our agendas. Its happening right now. I’ve read about some politicians approving mesures to exploit further in nature in order to recover from the global economic crisis due to pandemic.  For me, this pandemic has been a short (and dramatic) trailer of the real movie that will end us forever, the Climate Change».

Glimpses of the lockdown

Great news for the fans of the international artist Joan Fontcuberta  -the one that made the beautiful photomosaic in the heart of Barcelona named ‘the kiss of freedom.’ Together with the Cruilla festival and the Omnium Cultural, Fontcuberta is back with a giant photomosaic idea again or a so called ‘autohomenage’ to the medical sector and the solidarity of all the people staying home linked to the situation arising from the COVID-19. The title is going to be ‘glimpses of the lockdown’ and the good news is that you can participate as well!

Upload a picture with the link beneath of these days of lockdown showing this ‘collective solidarity’

Because we believe just as Fontcuberta himself, that all of us are a key piece to weave this great network of solidarity. https://miradesdesdelconfinament.cat/en/

Rickshawriders

You have probably noticed them already. The many rickshaws in the city centre of Barcelona. They drive tourists from one place to another, giving tours and providing the tourists with information of the city. However, the rickshaw business is hard. Nowadays over 80% of the rickshaws you see on the streets in Barcelona is illegal and the legal cyclers are struggling. Six years ago you could find around 50 rickshaw tours in the city. Now, in 2019, there are over 1200 rickshaws ready to drive tourists around.

Aron Marcel Teixeira founder of Rickshaw Riders Barcelona is one of the most experienced rickshaw tour guides in Barcelona. He started his business six years ago. His rickshaw is more than just a bike. Wi-Fi, access to Spotify, music on the way, and power banks to recharge your devices. This “bike” has more luxury and class to it than the average flight agency that flies you from Amsterdam to Barcelona. It even has a blanket to keep you warm during the tour on cold winter days.

During our tour Aron tells me everything about tourism in Barcelona and how it is changing every year. Aron is struggling, he is one of the few riders who is providing tours legally and the government does nothings about the fact that 80% is illegal, which is very frustrating for Aron and his colleagues.

Aron has been living in Barcelona since 2011 but he visited Barcelona for the first time in 2009. “I was a professional skateboarder. I came to Barcelona because this place it the Mecca of street skateboarding.” Skateboarding was Aron’s top priority, he made a living of his hobby traveling the world to skateboard. Because of different injuries Aron stopped skateboarding. Even though skateboarding was his top priority, he studied graphic design and worked as a video editor for a few companies.

In March 2016 Rickshaw Riders Barcelona was born. “Other times back then, only 50 rickshaws in the city, having fun with the tourists.” Barcelona is an amazing city with a lot of different activities for tourists. This city will always be a nice place for a city-trip or a longer vacation however we do feel that the independency situation, even though its calm right now, is an influence on the tourists.

If I ask Aron what he likes about his job he tells me that he loves to talk and he loves to talk to the tourists. “They come from all over the world, Australia, Canada, The States, China but most of them are from Europe.” Aron likes to show them the city and to tell them about the buildings, history, architecture, food and other interesting things. Rickshaw Riders offers tourists different tours with different highlights but tourists can also decide where they want to go.

Minicards Barcelona and Rickshaw Riders have recently joined their forces. Tourists can find Minicards in the Rickshaw and use them right away.

If you want to explore Barcelona in a different and original way and see and feel the vibe of Barcelona definitely book a tour at Rickshaw Riders Barcelona. WhatsApp: 664896690 / www.rickshawriders.com

Barcelona

Who: Ciska van Schagen (49)

What: Minicards Barcelona 🇪🇸

Part of the Minicards network since: 2003

Exploits also: Minicards desk maps in two versions: English and Chinese

1. What’s your biggest milestone or achievement?
“I started Minicards Barcelona in 2003.A great concept: simple, easy to use and visible. My plan was to run this business for five years. I expected Minicards to be overtaken by digital media by then. But despite the online competition Minicards remains a strong product. The cards are still a popular source of information for tourists. I expect it stays like this in the near future, especially for those who don’t want to have a mobile in their hands on vacation all the time. Now, sixteen years later I’m still running Minicards. That’s quite a milestone and I’m proud of it.”

2. Can you tell us about your biggest challenge right now?
We are visible in hotels and other locations, but online there are still many opportunities. The biggest challenge for me is: how are we going to create more online visibility and profile ourselves on social media? In this way we can attract new customers and offer the existing ones even more service.”

3. What’s big on your to do-list for this year?
“Approaching customers by phone or email is not always effective; people do not read their mail or are difficult to reach. Via social media, such as LinkedIn, I see new opportunities. That’s why I want to focus on social selling. It would be great to make contact with potential customers through social media, so we can build up valuable relationships and start a sales process.”

4. What’s the most remarkable thing that ever happened at your business?
“Once, a Russian company wanted to advertise on Minicards. The contact person suggested to meet in the lobby of a hotel. I saw a man sitting at the bar with a suitcase beside him. I started to talk about Minicards, but he looked at me and said: «Don’t say anything. We’re just going to do business and here’s the money.» He pushed the suitcase towards me. It felt like I was in a mafia movie and didn’t accept the money. Confused I left. This was a Russian way of doing business, but I had no idea. In the end we worked together, by the way. Finally, I accepted the money, but not after he signed a contract of course.”

5. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned since starting your business?
“Always invest in personal contact with your customers. Start a conversation, and don’t be afraid to ask about personal stuff too. Building on a good relationship, so that customers know you and trust you, is worth its weight in gold.”
